It acts as an effective antiseptic, and also as an oxidizing agent, and has anti inflammatory action. As an antiseptic it reduces the number of skin surface bacteria and also helps in reduction of yeasts on the surface of the skin.

Benzoyl peroxide is an effective in the treatment of various kinds of acne. This is mostly due to the fact that it unclogs the pore by allowing the outlet of the pore to open, decreasing inflammation on the skin, and killing the acne bacteria. The chemical is applied on the affected area in the form of a gel or cream with a concentration of 10 percent or less. It may cause dryness and irritation.

Some people are sensitive to the drug and as such it is better to use a small quantity in the beginning and gradually increase the quantity so that the skin may get used to the chemical.
